Are your skin problems linked to your emotional wellbeing?
Can your happiness really affect your skin? Is there a direct link between the two? I truly believe that there is.
If you suffer from certain skin conditions, emotional issues can make them worse, and they may even prevent treatment from being effective.
Hereditary and genetic factors come into play too, of course. We can’t blame all our skin issues on our emotions. If you suffer from acne, this may be 50% due to hereditary factors, 30% due to your lifestyle, and only 20% due to psychological factors.
Think about it though. If you focus on tackling the emotional issues along with lifestyle factors, then you should definitely see an improvement in the overall health of your skin. Your feelings and emotional wellbeing have a much bigger impact on your physical body than you may think.
Your skin is your largest organ. If you’ve suddenly developed a skin condition that you didn’t have before, it’s worth taking a moment to think about what might be causing it. Have you been through anything traumatic recently? Do you have issues in your personal life that maybe you need to resolve?
Can the people around you affect your skin?
As odd as it sounds, yes they can! The people you surround yourself with impact your happiness and therefore your skin.
Think about the people you spend time with. Are they positive people? Or are they negative all the time? Do you feel happy or drained after spending time with them?
Thinking about those around you can be quite an eye opener. There’s no point being with those who make you feel stressed and unhappy.
Can bad moods make your skin worse?
Absolutely! Bad moods can cause wrinkles and blemishes too. Stress and anxiety can release cortisol into your body and throw off your gut health. This ends up affecting your hormones, which ultimately can show on your skin.
Do you find your breakouts get worse when you’re feeling stressed? It’s quite a common problem and definitely worth addressing if you find this happens regularly.
Focus on the positive
Positivity can help to improve your skin. It’s that simple. When you’re feeling relaxed and happy, these feelings are reflected in your skin – you will literally glow with happiness!
Positive emotions can actually increase your skin’s ability to repair and renew itself naturally, giving you that lovely fresh-faced, new skin glow.
If you’re in a good mood, this also helps to keep your hormones in check. Hormone imbalances are often at the heart of skin troubles, so if you can keep your hormones in balance, your skin will look better for it.
Work those face muscles! Smile, laugh, it really is good for you – both inside and out. Smiley, happy people will often look younger – they are actually working out their face which will have an anti-ageing effect. Being happy may just help to keep those wrinkles at bay a little longer.

- Surround yourself with people that you love and whose company you enjoy.
- Avoid those who are overly negative and who make you feel down.
- Exercise regularly. Staying active can really improve your mood and reduce feelings of depression, anxiety and stress.
- Get your beauty sleep. It really does work.
- Love your skin. Treat your skin well, and treat yourself well. Then you will glow from the inside out.
